Why I moved from Brampton to Calgary — and why you should too

Making the move from Brampton to Calgary was one of the biggest decisions of my life — and looking back, I can say it was absolutely the right one. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of Brampton, or you’re simply craving a fresh start, Calgary might just be calling your name.

For my family and me, the decision came down to a few key factors: less traffic, a more relaxed lifestyle, and the promise of more affordable housing. In Brampton, it often felt like we spent more time in our car than at home. The constant rush, packed streets, and never-ending construction could really wear you down. Calgary, on the other hand, offers a breath of fresh air — literally and figuratively. Commutes are shorter, roads are less congested, and you actually get to enjoy the drive with the Rockies in the distance.

The pace of life here is another huge plus. Brampton is vibrant and energetic, but sometimes that energy can feel a little too intense, especially when juggling work, school, and family activities. Calgary has a laid-back vibe that’s hard to describe until you’ve experienced it. People take the time to say hello, there’s a genuine sense of community, and weekends are for exploring nature, not just catching up on errands. We love heading out to Fish Creek Provincial Park or spending the afternoon at Prince’s Island Park — two of our new favorite spots to unwind as a family.

Affordability was a game-changer. Housing prices in Brampton have been climbing for years, making it tough for many to get ahead. In Calgary, we found a beautiful home that didn’t break the bank. Lower property taxes and a generally lower cost of living mean you can actually enjoy more of what life has to offer. We now have more space, both indoors and outdoors, and it’s made a world of difference for our family’s quality of life.

Of course, moving across provinces with a family isn’t without its challenges. One of our biggest questions was how to move all our stuff efficiently and affordably. After researching, we chose a reputable long-distance moving company that offered packing services and insurance. It made the process much less stressful. If you’re planning a similar move, start decluttering early and get multiple quotes — it really pays off.

Another concern was finding a job in Calgary while still living in Toronto. Thanks to online job boards and networking platforms like LinkedIn, I was able to apply for positions remotely and even attend virtual interviews. Many employers in Calgary are open to out-of-province candidates, especially if you have a move date in mind. My advice? Update your resume, tailor your applications to Calgary’s job market, and don’t hesitate to reach out to local recruiters for guidance.

Looking back, the move has been a blessing for our family. We have more time together, less stress, and a real sense of belonging. If you’re dreaming of less traffic, more space, and a chance to slow down and savor life, Calgary is worth considering. Who knows — your next adventure might be waiting out west!
